CALA Gets Hands On To Support Local School as Part of Community Bursary Scheme

30 July 2019

A Surrey based primary school has received a helping hand from award winning housebuilder CALA Homes as pat of their annual Community Bursary scheme.  Park Mead Primary School is a two form entry primary school serving the community of Cranleigh and its surrounding villages.  With over 420 pupils aged four to eleven years old, the school offers a vibrant learning environment focussed on high levels of achievement and high expectations, combined with a caring ethos which focuses on the development of the whole child.

CALA Homes which is building Amlets Place development in Cranleigh, launched the CALA Community Bursary in Surrey in February and invited organisations, charities and groups in the area to apply for a share of £13,000 to help fund projects that make a difference in the community.  Park Mead Primary School was chosen as a recipient of the bursary, who CALA were keen to support through the donation of labour in addition to those who received funding.  As part of the project, a five strong team of CALA volunteers and one of their contractors, attended the school to carry out vital repair works to the bridge and replacement of a fence and gate in the school's nature area.  The team also carried out additional maintenance works to the area including removal of overgrown hedges and weeding.

This year, the Community Bursary scheme has awarded a total of £109,000 to 117 good causes across the UK.  A further 200 causes have previously benefitted from the scheme, with over £200,000 awarded to various initiatives since 2017.

Mr McAuliffe, head teacher at Park Mead Primary School commented "we are always looking for new and exciting ways to engage the children in their learning and one of the key focus areas is currently our forest school approach and nature area.  We are lucky enough to have extensive grounds at the school, however it takes a huge amount of resources to maintain these grounds and it can often prove difficult to allocate resources for these areas.  We'd like to say an enormous thank you to CALA for their generosity and hard work on the improvements they have made to the nature area.  The fencing and bridge which crosses the pond both needed attention to ensure the safety of our pupils whilst using the space.  Thank you to the CALA team for carrying out the repairs and ensuring that our pupils can continue to enjoy the wildlife area fully for many more years to come".

Nikki Dennis, Sales & Marketing Director at CALA Homes (South Home Counties) said "CALA has always been committed to making a positive and lasting contribution to the local communities in which it builds and the Community Bursary scheme has given us the opportunity to find out exactly what support is required locally.  We are delighted to have supported Park Mead Primary School in carrying out the repair works to the fence and bridge in their nature area.  The works to the forest school were particularly appealing as it encourages the pupils at an early age to appreciate the wildlife and environment, something which CALA actively promotes across its developments".
